September 10, 2009 10:00 a.m.

On September 10, 2009, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission along with co-sponsors Wright State University, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc. will host a formal ceremony that will honor ten (10) citizens who have made significant contributions to the progress of the civil rights and equal justice in the State of Ohio. This program will serve to establish Ohio’s first-ever Civil Rights Hall of Fame and will continue on an annual basis. Through the collective efforts of these organizations, the program will occur as Ohio celebrates the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the Ohio Civil Rights Act and establishment of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission.

2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Essay & Multimedia Contest
 

 

Dr. King PhotoThe Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the City of Columbus Community Relations Commission are pleased to announce our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Essay & Multimedia Contest. The purpose of this contest is to encourage students to reflect upon Dr. King’s life and work and to think about how civil rights and diversity affect their lives. All Ohio students in grades 5-12 are invited to participate in this contest.

Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May 23rd, 2007
 

In honor of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, in conjunction with the Columbus Community Relations Commission, and the founders and participants of the Columbus Asian Festival, honored community leaders from all across the state of Ohio and celebrated the many achievements of the Asian American community. The event took place on May 23rd, 2007 at Sunflower Restaurant in Dublin, OH.

Learning about the Asian Culture is fun and exciting with the OCRC’s Activity and Live. Love. Learn. Journals. These API Heritage books are part of the “Cultural Horizons” program, a series of supplementary education materials for Grades 3-5 and 6-12. Celebrating Chinese New Year 2007

February 18, 2007 marked the first day of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Boar. OCRC's Director of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) presented a resolution to the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) and the Young Asian American Professionals Network at their Chinese New Year event held at the Makoy Center in Hilliard, OH. The event was MC'd by Channel 10 Anchor Angela An and Tim Tsao.

Celebrating Black History Month 2007

On January 31, 2007 to OCRC kicked off Black History Month with an exciting celebration and day of remembrance and honor of the history of African-Americans in this county. This celebration, held as part of the agency’s Celebrating Diversity program, paid tribute to the many contributions made by African-Americans throughout the state of Ohio.

The Ohio Civil Rights Commission has conducted our annual statewide 2007 Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing & Multimedia Contest. One student from each grade level was recognized at a ceremony on January 31, 2007 in Columbus, OH. The winning entries will be displayed at the Civil Rights Commission Central Offices throughout the year.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration
October 4, 2006
 

The OCRC and OCHLA (Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs) hosted a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on October 4, 2006. Community leaders and government officials throughout Ohio were in attendance. The keynote speaker was Lorain Police Chief Cel Rivera and resolutions honoring service and commitment to the Hispanic community were presented to Pastor Dan Vazquez, Juan Jose (“John”) Perez, Julieta Maria Simms, and Manuel Rodriguez.

  The Office of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement attend thed the kick off event of the 2006 Asian Festival. It was well attended by members of the community and sponsoring parties.
 
enAble Ohio: "Removing Barriers for People with Disabilities
May 16, 2006, OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Columbus
  In partnership with the Equal Employment Opportunities (EEOC) and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (ORSC) and with presentations from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the OCRC sponsored a free comprehensive seminar providing business owners, HR Managers, and the general public with in-depth review of State & Federal disability laws in the areas of Employment, Housing & Public Accommodation as well as information on vocational rehabilitation services. The seminar was a great success, with participants requesting a follow up seminar next year.
 
Glenn Institute Internship Reception
May 8, 2006, Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio
  The Executive Director along with the Director of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), attended a reception hosted by Senator John Glenn and the Ohio State University, to honor students who were apart of the institutes' high school internship program. Hanna Matus, a student of Hilliard Darby High school was placed with the Commission and was the valedictorian of her class. The John Glenn Institute program is a public service internship program that allows high school students in their senior year to gain first hand experience within organizations in the public sector.
 
OCRC honors former Chairman, Arthur L. Peterson
April 27, 2006, OCRC Central Office, Columbus
  In a private reception held at the OCRC's central office, Chairman Wheeler and the Commissioners honored former chairman of the commission, Dr. Arthur L Peterson, who served in that capacity from 1963-1964. In attendance were family members, including son, Representative Jon Peterson, friends and other local leaders who all came to honor a great humanitarian.
 
Commission Public Meeting
Civil Rights Days at BGSU, April 20, 2006, Bowling Green University, Bowling Green
  The Commission held its public hearing at BGSU where students and members of the community had an opportunity to hear cases as well as learn about the commission processes. Members of the OCRC staff also participated in "Civil Rights Days" by providing presentations on civil rights in Ohio and educating the students about the role and work of the Commission
 
The Chairman Speaks at City Club
February 28, 2006, City Club of Cleveland, Cleveland Ohio
  OCRC very own Chairman, Pastor Aaron Wheeler Sr was a guest speaker at the City Club of Cleveland. The luncheon was attended by local leaders, city officials and club members. In his presentation entitled "Civil Rights: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", the Chairman challenged attendees to fight injustice wherever it exists and continue to work with the Commission in its mission to elimination discrimination in the State of Ohio.
 
The Chairman Addresses the NAACP of Cleveland

  Chairman Aaron Wheeler Sr, addressed local community leaders and guests of the NACCP, sharing his experience as a civil rights leader in the state of Ohio. Chairman Wheeler discussed topics such as public accommodation, instances of racial profiling, and the Commission’s recent announcement to study potential problems arising from the use of credit scores in making hiring and other employment related decisions.

Let Freedom Ring
"A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.", January 23, 2006, Statehouse Atrium, Columbus
  Let Freedom Ring was a tribute to civil rights using selected readings and songs. LFR used our most powerful weapon, “words” from historic speeches and songs to explore both the complexity and simplicity of issues such as women’s suffrage, slavery, and human rights. Participants who performed readings included Jim Stowe of Columbus Community Relations, Senator Ray Miller, Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson, and our very own Chairman, Aaron Wheeler Sr. Commissioner Jeanine Donaldson performed songs, making it an unforgettable evening.
