Asian Festival Kick-Off Gala

  The Office of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement attend thed the kick off event of the 2006 Asian Festival. It was well attended by members of the community and sponsoring parties.
 
enAble Ohio: "Removing Barriers for People with Disabilities
May 16, 2006, OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Columbus
  In partnership with the Equal Employment Opportunities (EEOC) and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (ORSC) and with presentations from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the OCRC sponsored a free comprehensive seminar providing business owners, HR Managers, and the general public with in-depth review of State & Federal disability laws in the areas of Employment, Housing & Public Accommodation as well as information on vocational rehabilitation services. The seminar was a great success, with participants requesting a follow up seminar next year.
 
Glenn Institute Internship Reception
May 8, 2006, Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio
  The Executive Director along with the Director of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), attended a reception hosted by Senator John Glenn and the Ohio State University, to honor students who were apart of the institutes' high school internship program. Hanna Matus, a student of Hilliard Darby High school was placed with the Commission and was the valedictorian of her class. The John Glenn Institute program is a public service internship program that allows high school students in their senior year to gain first hand experience within organizations in the public sector.
 
OCRC honors former Chairman, Arthur L. Peterson
April 27, 2006, OCRC Central Office, Columbus
  In a private reception held at the OCRC's central office, Chairman Wheeler and the Commissioners honored former chairman of the commission, Dr. Arthur L Peterson, who served in that capacity from 1963-1964. In attendance were family members, including son, Representative Jon Peterson, friends and other local leaders who all came to honor a great humanitarian.
 
Commission Public Meeting
Civil Rights Days at BGSU, April 20, 2006, Bowling Green University, Bowling Green
  The Commission held its public hearing at BGSU where students and members of the community had an opportunity to hear cases as well as learn about the commission processes. Members of the OCRC staff also participated in "Civil Rights Days" by providing presentations on civil rights in Ohio and educating the students about the role and work of the Commission
 
The Chairman Speaks at City Club
February 28, 2006, City Club of Cleveland, Cleveland Ohio
  OCRC very own Chairman, Pastor Aaron Wheeler Sr was a guest speaker at the City Club of Cleveland. The luncheon was attended by local leaders, city officials and club members. In his presentation entitled "Civil Rights: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", the Chairman challenged attendees to fight injustice wherever it exists and continue to work with the Commission in its mission to elimination discrimination in the State of Ohio.
 
The Chairman Addresses the NAACP of Cleveland
February 27, 2006, NAACP Cleveland Offices, Cleveland Ohio
  Chairman Aaron Wheeler Sr, addressed local community leaders and guests of the NACCP, sharing his experience as a civil rights leader in the state of Ohio. Chairman Wheeler discussed topics such as public accommodation, instances of racial profiling, and the Commission’s recent announcement to study potential problems arising from the use of credit scores in making hiring and other employment related decisions.

Let Freedom Ring
"A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.", January 23, 2006, Statehouse Atrium, Columbus
  Let Freedom Ring was a tribute to civil rights using selected readings and songs. LFR used our most powerful weapon, “words” from historic speeches and songs to explore both the complexity and simplicity of issues such as women’s suffrage, slavery, and human rights. Participants who performed readings included Jim Stowe of Columbus Community Relations, Senator Ray Miller, Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson, and our very own Chairman, Aaron Wheeler Sr. Commissioner Jeanine Donaldson performed songs, making it an unforgettable evening.
